Sixty thousand people leave London Stadium at the same moment. They funnel across the bridges of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, through the Westfield concourse, and into Stratford station, one of the busiest egress operations in the city, repeated every home fixture and every summer concert night.

If your hotel is in the Stratford corridor, you are in that crowd, and you stay in it: the queue at the station becomes the queue in the lobby, then the queue at the bar, then a mid-market room with a party of eight next door who have had a very good evening.

There is a more civilised way to attend a mega-event in east London, and it involves travelling against the flow.

Canary Wharf sits four stops down the Jubilee line from Stratford, roughly 12 minutes, running counter to the crowds, who overwhelmingly head north and west towards central London and Essex. On the other side is a private residence with a dining table, a balcony over the water, and a district that has no idea a match has just finished.

The Jubilee line, the working route

The Jubilee line runs Canary Wharf to Stratford direct, four stops via North Greenwich, Canning Town and West Ham, in about 12 minutes. Trains run every two to three minutes on event days and late into the night.

The honest door-to-turnstile arithmetic from our residences:

• 7–9 minutes on foot to Canary Wharf station

• ≈12 minutes on the Jubilee line

• 12–15 minutes from Stratford through the park to your gate

Call it just over half an hour, door to seat, comparable to a Stratford hotel once you account for the walk across the park, which everyone makes regardless of where they slept.

The decisive advantage is the return. After a sell-out, Stratford's platforms hold the Central line, the Elizabeth line, the Overground and c2c crowds heading into town and out to Essex. The Jubilee southbound carries a fraction of that load. You are on a train while the concourse is still filling.

The DLR, the scenic alternative

The DLR also runs direct from Canary Wharf to Stratford, via Poplar, Bow Church and Pudding Mill Lane, in roughly 15–17 minutes. Slower, elevated, driverless and considerably emptier, and it deposits you at the southern end of the park, closer to the stadium than the main Westfield approach. On a warm evening with the front seats free, it is the better journey.

A note on the Elizabeth line: it serves Stratford, but not directly from Canary Wharf, you would travel west and back. Use it for what it is genuinely superb at from E14: Heathrow in about 55 minutes and the West End in about 13, either side of your event days.

Private chauffeur

Playbook for Flagship Olympic Park Events

Matchdays at London Stadium

A correction worth making, because it changes what to book and when: West Ham United are not in the Premier League this season. Relegation in May 2026 ended a fourteen-year stay in the top flight, and the club plays in the EFL Championship through 2026/27.

For visitors, this is more interesting than it sounds. A Championship season is 46 games, 23 at home, four more than a Premier League campaign, and the fixture list is dense with London derbies and travelling support: Millwall, Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers locally, plus Wrexham, whose international profile now fills away ends wherever they go. Ticket availability is better than it has been in years, and a promotion push makes for a compelling season narrative.

Premier League football returns to the stadium the moment the club does. If you hold Premier League hospitality and are planning a 2026/27 visit, the fixture you want may be at a different ground, worth checking before you book flights.

Summer stadium concerts

London Stadium is one of the few British venues that can stage a full stadium tour, and its summer concert programme is announced far later than the football calendar. Two practical notes: concert nights finish later than matches, which makes late arrival the single most useful amenity we offer; and stadium shows draw a national audience, so E14 fills earlier than for a league fixture. Baseball and international one-offs

The MLB London Series has been among the stadium's biggest draws, converting the pitch to a ballpark for the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Cardinals, Mets and Phillies across previous editions. Be aware that the planned 2026 Yankees–Blue Jays series was cancelled, a stadium conversion clash and a US broadcast schedule dominated by the World Cup and nothing is confirmed for 2027, with international fixtures tied to the next collective bargaining agreement. Major League Baseball has restated its commitment to Europe, so treat the series as likely to return rather than annual, and book when it is announced.

The stadium also hosts international athletics each summer, when the track returns and the Olympic legacy is at its most literal.

The Olympic heritage venues

The park is not one venue but several, and the others are open to the public year-round:

• London Aquatics Centre: Zaha Hadid's building, and you can swim in the Olympic pool. The best hour available in Stratford, and almost empty on weekday mornings.

• Copper Box Arena: 7,500 capacity, hosting basketball, boxing, netball and esports tournaments. The right scale for an event where you want to see faces rather than screens.

• Lee Valley VeloPark: the Olympic velodrome, with track sessions and BMX open to booking, plus a spectator calendar of track cycling.

Pre-Match and Post-Event Unwinding in Canary Wharf

The argument for basing yourself in E14 is that there is somewhere to go afterwards that is not full of the event you have just left.

Hawksmoor Wood Wharf: the waterside steak dinner for the client group, or the celebration if the result went your way.

ROKA Canary Wharf: robatayaki at the counter, and an early sitting that comfortably clears a 15:00 kick-off or a 19:45 start.
